9 Fun Activities for Babies and New Mommies

May 3, 2019 | Leave a Comment

Ah, motherhood: there’s nothing quite like it. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s all sunshine and roses. Aside from being beautiful, joyous, sleep-depriving, and stressful, it can also be a little boring.

This is why it’s sometimes a good idea for mothers to participate in special activities with their babies. These activities not only break up the monotony of childcare, but they also bring mommy and baby closer together.

Looking for some fun activities to do with your baby? Then read on. We’re going to discuss 9 fun activities for babies and new mommies!

Fun Activities for Babies and New Mommies

The hum-drum of feeding, burping, and changing a baby is undoubtedly important. However, every once in a while, it’s wise to forget about things such as milk charts and the best changing pad so that you can take time to have some fun with your baby.

Without further ado, here are some of the most fun activities to do with babies.

1. Shoot Some Movies

Want to capture memories and have a great time while doing so? If so, you and your baby should try shooting some movies together. All you need is a smartphone camera and a willingness to be creative.

While you could just record videos of you and your baby acting natural, you could also come up with a screenplay and try to create something a little more substantial. Your baby isn’t going to know exactly what’s going on, but he or she will likely still enjoy the experience.

Plus, you’ll get a chance to get your creative juices flowing. A welcome reprieve from the endless feeding, burping, and diaper-changing.

2. Take a Trip to the Library

Looking for an excuse to get out of the house for a while? A trip to the local library could be just the thing you need. Not only will you be able to introduce your baby to some new books, but you might also be able to find some books for yourself.

Plus, a trip to the library gives you a great opportunity to engage in story time. Not only will this time help you and your baby to bond, but it will also help instill in your baby a lifelong interest in literature.

3. Look at Some Animals

Seeing as they’re new to the planet, babies aren’t all that familiar with animals. In fact, aside from any pets that you might have roaming around the house, your baby is likely completely oblivious to animals.

This is why it might be a good idea to take your child to a zoo or aquarium. While you’ve likely seen the animals at the zoo thousands of times, your child is probably completely unaware of their existence. Because of this, he or she is bound to be fascinated by them.

4. Go Hiking Together

Taking care of a baby is time-consuming. For some moms, it’s so time-consuming that it eliminates any chance of exercise. However, there is a way to get exercise and keep your baby interested at the same time: hiking!

Strap your baby up in a chest carrier and hit the trails so that you can burn some calories and enjoy nature. Along the way, you can interact with your baby while he or she takes in the unique sites.

5. Bake Something Together

There isn’t a baby on the planet that can bake prize-winning cakes. However, this doesn’t mean that babies shouldn’t bake. In fact, by starting baking early with your child, you could lead him or her to a lifelong hobby or — who knows — maybe even a rewarding career.

Though you’ll have to mix the dough and handle the oven, you can still get your baby involved in the baking process. Lay out a few ingredients and let your baby decide which ones you should use.

The result could be terrible . . . or it could be amazing. But that’s aside from the point. The primary objectives are to get your baby acquainted with something new and for the two of you to spend productive time together.

6. Take a Dip in the Pool

Is the summer sun beaming down? Desperate to hit the pool but unsure as to whether you can bring your baby? Not only can you bring your baby to the pool, but you should bring your baby to the pool!

The sooner you get your baby in the pool, the easier time he or she is going to have swimming. Babies can go to the pool as early as 6 weeks old. Once they’ve hit that age, their immune systems are more than equipped to handle any insidious bacteria or viruses.

7. Paint!

One of the tried and trued baby activities, painting never seems to go out of style. If you haven’t already, you should buy some paper and some paints and let your child’s imagination run wild. You, of course, should get in on the act as well, spurring on your child’s creative curiosity.

6 months of age is usually a good time for a baby to start fingerpainting. Once he or she reaches 18 months or so, you can add a brush.

8. Explore the Park

Another great activity for moms and their babies is to explore the local park. The list of things to do at a park is essentially endless. You can go for a walk, play on the playground, people-watch, and much, much more.

Trips to the park will not only assist in the baby’s social development, but it will also give mom a much-needed break from the confines of home.

9. Learn a New Language Together

As time passes, it becomes more and more important for Americans to be able to speak more than one language. For this reason, you and your baby might consider learning a new language together.

Obviously, a baby isn’t going to be fluent at such a young age. However, by planting the seeds of the language, you give your baby a good chance of developing it as he or she grows.

Learn More About Your Baby

The fact of the matter is that there are endless fun activities for babies and new mommies to engage in. After all, babies are entirely new to the world and are intrigued by almost everything they see. It isn’t too hard to keep them amused in a way that will also amuse you.
