Clothing swaps are becoming a big trend right now and it really is one great way to modify your closet and save money. If you are unclear of how one works, a group gathers together and brings clothes and accessories they are looking to get rid of. They literally swap clothes and anything that is not claimed can either go home with the original owners or be donated to a local thrift store (this is the most popular option). While some circles focus on clothing swaps for children, we are seeing more people do it for adult clothing as well. Here are some ways you can start a clothing swap and part ways with clothes you just aren’t wearing.
Start Small
Keep things easy by starting with a group of friends, a church group, or your neighbors. A handful of people is just enough to get the hang of things. With a small group, you all can decide together on the functions of the group. Are you focusing on a specific type of clothing (casual wear, office wear, etc)? Are you going to take turns hosting the swap? How often would your swap be necessary? Many people keep the types of clothes wide open but insist everything be free of stains, odors, and has functional zippers. Buttons missing is okay in some groups while others insist all buttons are replaced before the swap.
Be Specific With The Invitations
As your swap grows, it will be important for the invitation to reflect what the expectations of the swap are. If the focus is strictly costume jewelry, shoes, and other accessories, say so! If you only want to swap spring and summer clothes before the season starts, that needs to be on the invitation. It is also a good idea to instruct everyone to bring bags or baskets to fill with the items they want to take home. Time, date, location, contact information, and directions will also be important.
Get Ready For The Arrivals
Before everyone arrives, you want to be sure that your swap area is ready for the items coming. Shoes should be in one specific area and able to show off the shoes neatly while not impeding traffic. Tables are very helpful for tee shirts, jeans, pants, and so on. A clothing rack, if you have one, is helpful for any dresses or long jackets. If you are offering light snacks, be sure that the eating is handled in the kitchen or an area not around the clothing.
Have A Fitting Area
It is super helpful if people can try on clothes before they take them and a single bathroom can get crowded quickly. If you can, designate some bedrooms or smaller rooms that can be closed off so people can try stuff on. You can add a bit of fun by having everyone model the items and you can let them know how they look.
Don’t worry about things like size differences between people, these things always work out as they should. This is also supposed to be fun so be sure you are enjoying the swap right along with everyone else!
