One of the many ways we can show love to our children is to encourage them to find hobbies and activities they love. When our children become adults, they will need activities that can help them enjoy life during their time off. Here are some suggestions for helping your children find and enjoy hobbies:
Learn Their Interests
Watch your children when they are at home, and see what their interests are. Listen to details as they recount their day and check their grades at school. They may show they have a talent for music, art, or sports. If your children are part of their student government, they may work well with a community service organization or a church group. Ask your children what they’d like to learn more about.
Don’t Assume They Will Enjoy Your Hobbies
Just because you love line dancing or hiking, don’t assume your children will feel the same way. When you love an activity, it may seem difficult not to want your child to share those interests. If you insist on your children spending their time on activities they don’t care about, they may no longer have the passion to follow their own passions.
Help Them Overcome Physical Barriers
If your child is involved in an auto accident or sustains a sports injury, they could experience a period when they need help to resume walking, let alone participate in sports. Your role as a parent, if this occurs, should then prioritize their ability to walk. They may be able to receive help from a physical therapist. After all, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are almost 247,000 physical therapists in the United States.
Give Them a Way to Practice the Sports They Love
If your child discovers they enjoy baseball, it could become a lasting pastime – or even turn into a career if they’re a gifted ballplayer. Baseball can provide healthy exercise and lessons in teamwork for your child. If you see they have a unique talent, such as hitting home runs, you can offer them additional opportunities to develop that talent. As an option, according to the Pitching Machines Guide, you could let them spend time with a pitching machine, which will usually be set to throw at a rate of 70 mph.
Include Their Hobby in a Family Vacation
When we see our children enjoying their hobbies, it can provide reassurance that our children may continue their hobbies during their adulthood. As adults, we have learned that life brings stress and hard work – and our hobbies can be a welcome relief. According to a recent OnePoll survey, almost 70% of the respondents plan a vacation to escape the burnout they feel from their daily lives. We can show our children that hobbies can be part of those vacations by ensuring we reserve time for your child’s preferred activities on your family vacation.
Become Part of Your Child’s Hobby
You may not enjoy the same pastimes as your child, but you can show them support by investing time in their hobbies. You don’t have to run with them on a track team or play sax with them in the band, but you can ensure they make it to every practice and give them adequate time to practice and improve. Learn more about the hobby they like, so when they share details, you know what they’re talking about. At the very least, sit in the stands to watch the track meets or in the audience at the band’s concert.
Your child may find many passing interests, and you may find some of them bewildering. Most of all, let them know how much you encourage their pursuit of those interests. Please sit back and enjoy the view as you celebrate the sights of your child discovering themselves. Here’s hoping those experiences will bring your family closer together.
